Types of sand

Sand, one of the types of building material, without which it can not do, almost no construction. Sand is used in the manufacture of plaster mortars, concrete. They add sand from the sand when paving slabs are laid, and they are used in the construction of roads and railways. It is an abrasive material in sandblasting all kinds of materials. It is simply impossible to list all types of construction work and the production of building materials in a small article, where sand is one of the components.

There are two types: natural and artificial

Natural sand is mainly formed from sedimentary rocks, most often from minerals of quartz, feldspar and other components of these rocks. Artificial sand is made of gravel or rock rock, using special equipment for this, which crushes the rock and gives out sand grains up to 5 mm in size.

There are quite a few varieties of sand. The main difference between them is the presence of dusty and clay particles. And, of course, the so-called particle size modulus. The density of pure sand is approximately 1.3 tons per cubic meter. If the density of the sand is about 1.8t / m3, then it has a high moisture and clay content.

Sand is divided into the following types, namely: marine, river, mountain or quarry and alluvial. It all depends on where this sand lies and forms.

  • Quarry sand. Extraction is conducted in an open way in quarries. Sometimes, it is made by crushing gravel. In this form often contains a lot of clay, various organic inclusions. This sand is used, to a greater extent, for plastering and foundation work. Due to its low cost, quarry sand is in great demand in construction.
  • Sea sand has a high degree of purification from various impurities of natural origin. By quality, sea sand is considered one of the best (as a filler) for the preparation of concrete mixtures, concrete, reinforced concrete products ... Sea sand is a universal material that is in demand in housing, road and civil engineering.
  • River sand is a building material of natural origin. Often there is river sand without a large amount of impurities. Then he does not need additional cleaning. The main field of application is road construction, concrete production, housing construction.
Types of sand by grain size: coarse-grained and fine-grained
  • Coarse sand. The grain diameter of coarse sand ranges from 05 mm to 2 mm. Scope: construction and installation works. The use of coarse sand can conditionally be divided into the production of paving slabs, dry mixes, concrete; border. It is used in the construction of roads, drainage structures and is used in landscaping.
  • Fine sand. Has a grain diameter of 0.25mm-0.05mm. It is used for the finishing of internal and external surfaces of premises. In addition, quartz fine-grained sand is used in the manufacture of refractory bricks.
