Stylish wall and ceiling design in drywall

Uneven ceiling, poor sound insulation, insufficient wall insulation - everyone may encounter such difficulties when performing repairs on their own. However, applying a thick layer of plaster is not the only way to solve such problems, because there is such a convenient building material as drywall. He took a leading position in the market due to his optimal ratio “price - quality - physical costs”. Reducing labor costs for tedious cementing, plastering and puttying procedures, combined with short installation times and ideal quality of decoration, are the advantages of drywall constructions.

The gypsum plasterboard is a plate with a gypsum core, covered on both sides with a dense paper base (cardboard). The standard sheet has dimensions 2.5 * 1.2, rarely - 2 * 1.2 meters. Depending on the planned finishing works, you can choose the thickness of the sheet: as a rule, 12.5 mm is used for walls and partitions, 9.5 mm for the ceiling.

One of the positive qualities of this material is the ability to maintain a natural microclimate in the room, absorbing excessive moisture and giving off moisture if the air becomes dry. In this regard, it is advisable to place the purchased drywall for some time in a dry room in order to get rid of excess moisture, otherwise after installation the sheet may become deformed. In addition, the wet panel cannot be covered with paint or wallpaper.

The sensitivity of the material also determines the need for its installation at a temperature of at least + 10 degrees. When choosing gypsum plasterboard as a cladding, it should be borne in mind that in the repaired room there should be no changes in temperature and humidity, as this can lead to structural failure, that is, for a cottage on which no one lives in the winter, it is better to choose another finishing material. In addition, for rooms with high humidity, such as bathrooms and kitchens, there is a special waterproof gypsum board.

If you plan to veneer the entire room with drywall, then work should begin from the ceiling, after finishing which they proceed to wall cladding. At the same time, it is important to remember the compatibility of the materials used in the repair, so it is advisable to seal the joints of drywall, for example, with plastic, with a special adhesive tape.

If the facing surface is easily drilled and has sufficient strength, then the installation of drywall panels can be carried out without the use of profiles, using long dowels or nails. However, this mounting option is only suitable for flat walls of a house built more than three years ago (to exclude the possibility of building sagging). Otherwise, the drywall construction may become deformed. Plasterboard sheet is well attached to concrete poorly aligned walls with a mortar.

The most common type of installation is a frame mount made of aluminum profiles. With their help, it is realistically possible to create the most complex structures, including multi-level ceilings and niches. For this installation method, it is important to accurately measure each structural element so that distortions do not occur. It is useful to make a preliminary drawing of the location of sheets and profiles, as well as attachment points, not only on paper, but also directly on the surface being repaired.

Plasterboard panels are quite fragile, but heavy, so large sheets should not be installed alone. Particular attention must be paid to the correct transportation and storage of the material. Typically in warehouses, drywall panels are placed horizontally on top of each other to avoid damage to the edge of the sheet. If after transportation the edge of the sheet becomes loose to the touch, in this form it is not suitable for facing. Sometimes it turns out to restore the material by wetting it with water, and then drying it. Otherwise, the deformed edge will need to be cut. When cutting drywall, only a sharp tool is used to prevent gypsum crumbling along the cut line. The procedure resembles cutting glass. With a well-sharpened knife under the ruler, with considerable effort, first cut the top layer of cardboard deeply, and then break the material like glass. The bottom layer of cardboard is then cut with a knife.
So, drywall panels are an environmentally friendly and safe finishing material, quite easy to use and affordable. Knowing the features of working with drywall, you can get the perfect finish without unnecessary physical effort and loss of time, implementing the most interesting design solutions.
