Furniture painting methods taking into account all the nuances, the main stages of work

It happens that the furniture is already tired or does not fit into the new interior, and it is a pity to throw it away. Painting furniture will give any product a completely new look. This is a perfectly acceptable option for updating the situation, because the work will not require special equipment or special skills.

Necessary tools and materials

Only through the use of appropriate tools and high quality materials can an excellent painting result be achieved.

The main tools that are used for repair work:

  • Brushes - available with natural bristles (for working with oil, alkyd paints) and artificial fibers (for applying latex and acrylic compounds);
  • Paint rollers greatly facilitate repair work. Due to the simplicity of the design, special skills are not required. It is especially convenient to paint large areas of the surface with rollers (wood-based panels, facades). The only drawback is that it is impossible to paint over small or narrow sections;
  • Spray guns / spray guns allow you to evenly apply the paint, and the surface is smooth (sometimes this can be difficult to achieve with a brush or roller). The repair time is also significantly reduced;
  • Emery paper, metal brush, masking tape, spatulas.

For high-quality coloring of objects, various compositions are used. When choosing a paint, it is important to consider their features:

  • Oil paint is created on the basis of drying oil, pigments, various fillers. The opaque coating is quite resistant, it can be washed with detergents that do not contain abrasives. It is better to apply paint with brushes. A significant drawback is the long drying of the painted surface and a sharp unpleasant odor;
  • Water-based compositions are characterized by harmlessness, quick drying. You can apply paint with a roller - the layers are uniform. Water-based paints are used even for painting leather furniture (it is recommended to apply the composition with a sponge). Mixtures are vinyl (durable and easy to wash), acrylic (create a protective breathing layer), latex (form a durable and durable surface). Acrylic paints are great for DIY do-it-yourself furniture. A very popular trend in decor is furniture painting with acrylic (photos are presented below);
  • Alkyd paints are created on the basis of solvents (ideal for painting furniture for the garden, outdoor terrace), silicone;
  • The technology of furniture painting involves the use of a primer that provides adhesion of paint / varnish, increases the durability of the furniture (disinfects and protects the material). Primers for furniture are made on different bases (acrylic, alkyd, silicone-acrylic, shellac, epoxy). By functional properties, they are antiseptic, deep penetration, universal.

Depending on the type of furniture (indoor, garden / country) and the material, the type of paint is selected. At home, it is better to work with acrylic paint - it is easier to apply, does not have a pungent odor and dries quickly.

Technology of work

Do-it-yourself furniture painting does not take much time and effort if you prepare the necessary tools, materials and sequentially complete all work processes.

Preparatory stage

For convenient work and high-quality painting of furniture structures (cabinets, chests of drawers, tables), it is recommended to disassemble them minimally: remove the doors, remove the drawers and unscrew the handles, locks. If there are mirrors or glass on the facades, then their surface is carefully covered with paper.

Furniture for painting needs to be thoroughly cleaned. Dust, dirt from the surface of the furniture is washed off with a liquid detergent, items are left to dry. To remove the old coating, use sandpaper (polished furniture is cleaned) or paint thinner. The special composition is applied with a brush (especially carefully on the side and corner sections of the furniture), it is allowed to dry for several minutes, the surfaces are re-coated and the old paint is removed with a spatula. At the corners, the coating is removed with a metal brush or emery cloth. If it is planned to paint lacquered furniture, then the removal of the old coating is carried out especially carefully, otherwise the new layers will be poorly applied and adhered.

It is advisable to remove fine dust with a vacuum cleaner or a brush (dust can get into cracks from wipes). Chips or deep cracks are sealed with putty.

Primer

This stage can significantly reduce paint consumption, since the composition fills the pores and cracks of wood. On small products (shelves, chairs), the primer is applied with a brush. To cover large, flat areas (countertops, cabinets) it is advisable to use a roller. Typically, manufacturers indicate on the packaging the tool that is recommended to be used.

For a high-quality primer, the composition is applied twice. For the first time, the mixture is slightly diluted - thanks to this, small cracks are filled. Products leave to dry for a couple of hours. When re-primed, the products are coated with an undiluted composition.

Ways of painting

For applying a decorative layer, you can use equipment for painting furniture or traditional brushes, rollers. Moreover, there are several options for applying paint:

  • To apply a uniform coating to any objects (cabinet, chair) in a short period of time, it is better to use a special tool. Before choosing a spray gun for painting objects at home, you need to decide how often it will be used. For rare work, a cordless spray gun is quite suitable, which is easy to work in uncomfortable (inaccessible) places. To paint lay evenly, the jet is directed perpendicular to the surface, moving the apparatus in a circular motion. Painting MDF with a spray gun is just perfect;
  • The use of rollers and brushes refers to the traditional and least costly methods. For painting small elements, corners, seams, brushes are used, and even areas are faster covered with a roller. It is important to apply the paint in one direction. Moreover, wood products are painted along the fibers. If a single coating layer may be sufficient for a wooden object, then the furniture from the chipboard is painted several times. In the event of air bubbles on the painted surface, they are ground and the areas are then repainted. To prevent the occurrence of such defects, be sure to use special containers - ditches. They allow you to squeeze excess paint from the roller.

To create a two-color coating, masking tape is used. First you need to determine the pattern, choose harmonious shades of paint. Initially, the furniture is painted in the paint of the main shade and left for drying. Then pasted areas in which the color will not change. It is important to stick the adhesive tape tightly, otherwise uneven contours and streaks may result. Apply a layer of additional paint, leave the furniture to dry and then remove the adhesive tape.

Post processing

Today, designers offer many ideas on how to unusually repaint furniture. Through the use of simple techniques, you can make any product a real interior decoration. When decorating antique furniture (vintage style), a water-dispersed acrylic mixture is applied with a paint roller. If a brush is used, it is necessary to make wide strokes, avoiding the occurrence of sagging (you can eliminate them with sandpaper). After drying, the paints begin to create the effect of scuffing: the natural places of abrasion of the paint (corners, near the pens) are wiped with fine sandpaper. To furniture has a natural look, the entire surface is processed with light movements. dust is removed and an additional coat of paint is applied to give the coating smoothness.

Updating by using different shades of furniture coloring, technological methods can give a different style. Smooth glossy surfaces are suitable for modern interiors, and furniture with the effect of artificial aging will fit perfectly into the setting of Provence, country.

How to paint complex areas

So that in hard-to-reach places of furniture details the paint does not accumulate in a thick layer, it is better to use narrow brushes with curved handles. At the same time, it is important not to collect a lot of paint so that leaks do not occur.

A great way to quickly and evenly repaint hard-to-reach spots is to use aerosol cans. As a rule, the compositions in such containers are universal and suitable for painting any surfaces (furniture made of MDF, veneer, wood). But you can pick up cylinders with acrylic, oil, latex paints. Manufacturers also produce products that give surfaces a matte, glossy or pearlescent effect.

Sometimes repainting furniture is the best option for updating the interior. And you don’t even have to disassemble the structures - just change the "look" of the facades. This method of changing the situation allows you to significantly transform the premises in a short time and at low cash costs, giving it freshness and originality.
