Original succulent sedum - planting and care at home, photo

Many plant growers sometimes want to diversify their windowsill with something unusual. Stonecrop or sedum is a plant that differs from many indoor flowers in its appearance, and will always stand out against their background.

The plant is a leaf succulent, stems and processes, depending on the species, can be straight or lying. Leaves in appearance are very thick and fleshy in structure. The plant blooms in summer, throwing out colorful flowers in the form of stars or bells.

Variations of the name of the plant

Stonecrop, due to its appearance, can be called in different ways, such as: sedum, rabbit cabbage, buzzard or grapefruit. Many types of stonecrops were referred to as subcultures., the reason for this are the various forms of the bush and the shape of the flowers.

Stonecrops have small flowers with white, yellow and pale pink color, in the form of stars. Graduates are distinguished by flowers in the form of bells, while the color may correspond to stonecrops. The common characteristics of both are that their flowers are collected in corymbose inflorescences.

How to care at home?

  • Lighting. Stonecrop came to us from sunny and arid regions of Asia, therefore, they need bright sunlight, poor lighting can be a consequence of the fact that the plant will not bloom.
  • Temperature. In summer, the plant feels good at a temperature of 8 to 26 degrees. In winter, during the dormant period, stonecrop is best kept at a temperature of about 10 degrees.
  • Location. The place of detention should be chosen on the sunny side, but if this is not possible, it can take root in the shade, but the plant will lose its color and become faded.
  • Watering. The plant can do without water for the longest time, and therefore does not need abundant watering, and is irrigated on the basis of the soil - only when it is completely dry. The plant has thick, juicy leaves, with enough moisture, which helps it tolerate drought for a long time.Watering is recommended when the soil dries and begins to crack.
  • Air humidity. The plant takes root perfectly in any apartment, and humidity does not play any role.
  • Top dressing. To fertilize the soil, the plant is recommended in spring and summer once a month with fertilizers for cacti. In the autumn-winter period, it does not need feeding.
  • The soil. The soil for plant growth should be sandy. It is excluded to plant a flower in rich soil, since the plant fades and does not bloom from an overabundance of minerals.
  • Pruning. The procedure consists only in removing dry leaves and removing shoots that have not taken root in the spring.

Breeding

Propagation methods can be produced by seeds, cuttings and division of the bush.. Seeds are extracted from dried fruits, and sown on the soil. When dividing the bush, it is enough to simply put the sprout in the water for 1-2 days, until the roots appear, and then dive into the soil.

How to plant a flower?

Young plants that have grown to 5 cm or more can be planted in separate pots, while providing good soil drainage so that moisture does not stagnate. Ready-made soil for planting cacti can be bought at the store or prepared yourself by mixing the soil with a sufficient amount of sand.

Difficulty keeping the sedum

It is very important to choose a well-lit place, a stonecrop, even if it can survive, will not be as bright as when it was in the light. If there is very little light, the flower begins to fade and will not please you with flowering, since he will spend all his strength on the growth of the stem, which will tend to sunlight.

It is worth remembering that before planting a stonecrop, you need to carefully read the information about a particular species and care for it, as some still prefer a darkened place. As for growing in the open ground, the place where it will grow needs to be constantly cleaned, especially in the fall, when the leaves fall (about how to plant stonecrop in open ground and about further care for it, read here). Young stems are very weak and will not be able to germinate if they are disturbed by something.

When growing a house, the flower should be kept away from other pots, it has the peculiarity of growing rapidly and will interfere with all plants surrounding it. For an attractive type of stonecrop, the plant should be constantly pruned and yellowed foliage removed.

Stonecrop is very sensitive to weeds, so the soil around it must always be loosened, and to prevent the appearance of alien sprouts of weeds. Stonecrop unpretentious and unique, will always stand out among other plants. It is enough to follow a couple of simple rules, and the plant will not let you down, each time delighting with its flowering.
