The legendary Sedum of Morgan: description and photo of the flower, features of reproduction and care for it

The genus Sedum or Stonecrop is the largest in the family Crassulaceae: it has about 600 species of herbaceous plants. About 20 species are found in indoor floriculture; these are the most suitable plants for composing compositions.

Sedum is a wonderful ampel plant. The most famous is the Sedum of Morgan. We will talk in detail about its origin and cultivation features, methods of reproduction and care in our article.

Botanical characteristics, homeland and prevalence

Stonecrop Morgan (Sedum morganianum) belongs to the Tolstyankov family. Translated from Latin, the name means "pacification" It has long been used as painkillers. Softened leaves were applied to the wound from burns, from cuts. The birthplace of this plant is Mexico. In Mexico, it grows in rocky terrain, where there is almost no fertile soil.

Attention: There is a legend about the Sedum of Morgan. Phonos the son of Hercules was injured by an arrow fired by Achilles. The wound did not heal for a long time. The juice of this plant helped to cure this wound.

Amazingly shaped bluish-green long lashes look great in hanging flower pots. Their Sedum can grow up to 1 meter long. The stems of Sedum Morgan are thick, very densely covered with leaves. Its leaves are fleshy, pointed to the top. Which resembles fangs or claws in shape.

If you touch the flower, you can feel a small wax coating, which serves as a shield from sunburn. The plant is very fragile, even slightly hitting. Leaves fall off immediately. In place of the fallen, new leaves do not grow.

Sedum flowers are located at the very end of the drooping stem.. Usually collected in inflorescences up to 10 pieces each. The color is bright pink, red or purple. Buds look like tulips. In the open state is a five-pointed star.

Is it easy to grow and how long does it live?

Sedum Morgan can be grown without any problems in the summer on the southern windows. The scum of Morgan lives for about 6 years, after which it must be updated.

Variety of varieties

In indoor floriculture, there are about 20 types of sedum, among them sedum Adolf, sedum burrito, sedum Steel and others. Most often, Sedum Morgan can be confused with a Sedum burrito. The difference is that the stonecrop burrito has a bright green color, and the shape of the leaves is not pointed, but rounded.

Home Care

Cultivation at home is not difficult, all stonecrops are extremely unpretentious. However, with age, the sedum loses its decorativeness, since it easily loses its leaves, after 2-4 years the plant should be updated.

  • Lighting. Sedum is a photophilous plant, prefers a bright and well-lit place. If there is not enough light for him, he will begin to stretch out in the internodes, lose his decorative appearance.
  • Temperature. It is not significant, withstands large temperature differences. It is not advisable that sedum fall into drafts, otherwise it discards the lower leaves.
  • Location. Stonecrops easily tolerate heat in the summer on the southern windows, do not bloom in the shade. The plant needs regular ventilation of the room. It’s best to keep Morgan’s stonecrop on a closed window; a window opened on a frosty day will destroy him. In summer, it is preferable to take the plant out into the open air. In a room that is too hot, sedum may lose its lower leaves.
  • Watering. In summer, it is necessary to water abundantly, about 1 time per week, the rest of the time 2-3 times a month. Excess water from the sump should be drained. With prolonged drought, leaves are discarded. With excessive watering, it can get root rot.

If the plant has grown rapidly and it is impossible to get to the soil - you can use the lower watering, avoiding excess moisture. You can determine by the leaves whether there is enough water. Sedum Morgan begins to tread the leaves if watering is not enough.

  • Air humidity. It does not matter, you can occasionally spray to remove dust on the leaves.
  • Top dressing. Fertilize in spring and summer once a month, in the autumn-winter time the plant is not fertilized. It is necessary to use fertilizer for cacti and succulents.
  • The soil. The soil should be loose, suitable soil mixture for cacti with the addition of sand or brick chips. At the bottom of the pot you need to put drainage. Any mixture of turf and leafy land with the addition of coarse sand is also suitable.
  • Pruning. Pruning is necessary to give the plant a beautiful shape or to accelerate the growth of new shoots. It is carried out as follows: the stems are carefully cut, trying not to catch the leaves. It is better to use scissors.

Sedum breeding

Propagated very simply by rooting any part of the plant in wet sand. Most often propagated by dividing the bush, cuttings from any part of the stem, leafy cuttings. For rooting, a temperature of 16-20 degrees is needed. It should be propagated before or after flowering.

In the soil, you can add humus from the leaves, since Sedum Morgan needs a very light land. You also need to add vermiculite, it holds moisture and fluffs. It is practically useful for all plants to add perlite, which gives airiness and increases breathability. Perlite is put more than vermiculite.

Soil for orchids can be added to the mixture, it contains charcoal. Mix everything with small expanded clay so that the water drains faster on the dishes, because the plant does not like stagnation of water. Expanded clay (if the pot will stand) or polystyrene (if the pot will hang) is placed in one layer at the bottom of the pot, so as not to burden the pot. Next, you need to fill the soil in the dishes.

Cuttings

Cuttings are cut from an adult plant 10-15 cm long. Before planting, the cuttings must be dried. When a callus (crust) is formed on the handle, then you can transplant immediately into the ground.

  1. Dig a hole under the handle with a thin wand, inserting the handle, you need to carefully take the ground.
  2. On the side of the handle, which will be planted in the ground, it is necessary to strip the leaves. It is better to plant several cuttings at once, some may die. The distance between the cuttings is 5 -8 cm.
  3. In between the cuttings, you can sift the leaves. Which were previously dried too.
  4. Then you can sprinkle everything abundantly from the spray gun so that the upper centimeter layer of the earth is saturated with water.
  5. It is necessary to place the pot immediately at a permanent place of residence of the plant.
  6. Water only when the land is dry.

Seeds

It is necessary to plant in a long wide pot. Seeds need a damp and warm room. Planting is simply sowing on top of the ground. No need to bury. Then the pot is covered with a film and placed under the lamp. You can plant seeds in summer and autumn.

Dividing the bush

Tip: Only adult plants propagate by dividing the bush. Digging a bush is in early spring.
  1. Its rhizome must be cleared of the earth. The division is carried out in such a way that in each part there are both roots and buds.
  2. Be sure to treat the sections with fungicide.
  3. Place delenki in a cool dark place for several hours.
  4. Drop off at a permanent place.

Landing

It is desirable to carry out landing of a sedum in the spring. Pots for planting are not deep, but wide, since the root system of the plant is horizontal.

For planting, you can use ready-made soil for cacti and succulents or garden soil with a neutral acidity level with the addition of coarse river sand.

Possible difficulties

  • It is very rarely affected by pests. The greatest danger to stonecrops is represented by nematodes and mealybugs.
  • Sedum roots can rot, this is due to overflow. As a result, the leaves may turn yellow and fall, the stem completely dies.
  • Due to the lack of sunlight, low temperature, bare sections appear between the leaves on the stems of the succulent.
  • Inadequate watering can cause leaf falling.

Conclusion

Sedum Morgana has a unique view. With proper care, the plant will delight the eye for a very long time. Taking care of ideal conditions, you can observe beautiful blooms.
