Roller doors: what you need to know about them ...

Roller doors are a modern innovation, which is primarily designed to save space, and only then for decorative purposes. The problem of the lack of square meters is now very common - not everyone can afford spacious dwellings. Therefore, more and more various “tricks” appear in order to at least somehow make life easier in small apartments.

Although it is not necessary that the sliding doors be used only in small rooms, they are also spacious in spacious rooms. Doors on casters - it is stylish, beautiful and unusual.

Benefits of Sliding Doors

1. Space saving

In the open state, the sliding door will not occupy a whole corner, it just needs a little free space along the wall, a little larger in size of the door itself. At the same time, when arranging furniture, there is no need to leave free space so that the door can open.

2. The door handle will not spoil the walls

This is a very unpleasant often encountered fact, when the door handle, resting against the wall, first spoils the wallpaper, then the wall itself.

3. Stylish

The appearance of the sliding doors creates an unusual and interesting atmosphere, the interior becomes elegant and refined.

4. Security

Walking in the dark, you do not run the risk of stumbling into an open door and hurt yourself. And also with a draft, the door will not shut on its own and will not harm anyone who, by “pure chance”, was in the doorway, this is especially important if there are small children in the house. And with cotton, the same handle can greatly damage the wall or glass of the door itself. It is extremely difficult to pinch your fingers, again safe for children. It often happens that one person opens the door (from himself), and the other is on the other side and he can be injured by opening the door. With a sliding system, this probability is eliminated.

Disadvantages of Sliding Doors

1. Low insulation

This applies to sounds, and heat, and to smells. The fact is that there is free space between the door frame and the door leaf so that the door can "go" back and forth. This design feature leads to poor insulation. The exception is the roto-door and the compartment door, whose box is mounted inside the wall. (We'll talk about the types of doors a bit later).

2. Price

Of course, prices for sliding doors are slightly higher than for swing doors. This is due to natural causes and the above advantages. The installation and accessories of the door on the rollers is also higher. In addition, ordinary handles and locks are not suitable for them.

Now let’s talk separately about the reliability of sliding doors. Someone considers them less reliable than oar. Others, by contrast, note their strength. To be honest, a lot depends on the quality of the door leaf, that is, any door can be made either good or bad. Further, it is important how the door is installed, if it is a quality mechanism and it is installed correctly, then the conclusion is obvious.

Two types of installation of the door mechanism on casters

1. Along the wall

A bar is mounted on the wall. Next, the guide of the sliding mechanism is installed on it (rollers move along it). The rollers are mounted on the door end (top) using a special bracket. To keep the door from vibrations in the area of the lower end, a groove for the guide flag is cut, which, in fact, holds the door. Then the doorway and the guide trim trims and extras.

Great space savings by opening the door along the wall

With this installation option, we get low sound and thermal insulation, as well as poor tightness.

2. Inside the wall

Here, the mount is hidden inside either a false wall or drywall wall. This installation requires redevelopment, that is, you need to make a U-shaped groove in the wall. It is much easier to mount the necessary groove if you are building a new wall. The hiding door can also be installed in a finished metal structure, this is a pencil case or cassette. They are first installed in the wall, then plastering or plasterboard is applied. And do not forget that such a door is hiding in the wall, so you need to think about the correct location of the handle.

Opening inside the wall not only saves space, but also contributes to greater tightness

This option assumes excellent insulation of sound and heat, since the door leaf is tightly connected to the opening, hence the tightness.

And now let's dwell on the types of sliding doors.

Kinds

1. Sliding doors

This type of door on casters has standard sizes. Unlike cabinet doors of the same type, they are not so thin and light, given their purpose. The handle and lock are different from those at the swing door. There may be one door leaf or two. The mechanism involves movement along the wall or inward.

2. Roto doors

Many people call such doors a “compromise” between sliding and swing doors. When opening, the door leaf slightly rotates, becoming perpendicular to the opening, and moves to the side, and to the right and left. Compared with a conventional roto-door, when open, it takes up half as much space. In addition, this type of door on casters has good tightness and sound insulation, as there is a special sealant around the entire door leaf.

3. Folding doors (accordion, book)

These doors have two (book) and more (accordion) elements that are connected using movable hinges. The upper or lower end is equipped with rollers moving along the guide. A special advantage of a folding door is that when opening it does not need additional space due to the fact that its wings fold. This version of the door is perfect as an interior, and even for a wardrobe or pantry room.

Note

The choice of door is influenced by the method of fastening, namely: upper or lower

- Upper (hanging). There are two carriages with rollers, an upper guide and a stop (stop) to secure the door. There is no bottom mount, which visually facilitates the design. In addition, there is no possibility of extra items falling into the rails, which would cause the canvas to jam. However, with this method of fastening there is always a backlash, that is, the door swings, since nothing supports it from below. Of course, you can install a special guide flag on the floor, this will slightly reduce the swing of the door.

- Lower (floor). The canvas using rollers moves along rails attached to the floor. Here, the presence of the upper guide, which will support the door, is mandatory. That is, the floor design guarantees stability. True, dust, any objects and so on will always fall into the rail, which will be on the floor.

We choose for ourselves ...

As a rule, the same door leaf can be used both as an oar and as a sliding structure. The difference is only the mounting mechanism. This suggests that the same materials and decor are available for both swing and sliding doors. That is, there is no separate gradation in materials for doors on casters. They can be, like oar, shield or paneled. For their manufacture, valuable wood species are also used, and chipboard, MDF, lamination, an array of conifers; can be glued with cloth, wicker, with an additional glass insert or without them, and so on.

  • Elegant sliding doors with glass inserts

  • Harmonious combination of door with an overall design

  • Cozy and comfortable in any room.

  • Easy operation makes sliding doors more popular.

  • Design can even be unimaginable

How to reinforce a wall for a sliding door

When installing the door on the rollers, it must be borne in mind that if the wall is made of drywall or foam block, this slightly complicates the process. The thing is that this type of wall is not strong enough to install similar structures in them. To solve this issue, it is necessary to use some kind of embedded element, which will play the role of a bearing support and thereby strengthen the wall. It can be a metal guide or a wooden beam. It is better, of course, to use a special pencil case, which has a minimum thickness and high strength.

A few words about the door frame ...

Many worry that sliding doors will not fit into the interior due to the box. The fact is that the finish can be any, matched to any style and design. So there will be absolutely no problems with this. Because when installing the box, the joints are closed with platbands, which can be finished, for example, with veneer of valuable wood species and so on. The design is selected in accordance with the door itself and the surroundings. As for glass doors, they use an aluminum doorway design, profiles can be anodized or painted with enamel. Of course, you can generally not frame the opening, just plaster it, then putty it and wallpaper it or paint it. The taste and color, as they say.
