Choosing sofa cushions for the living room

It is hard to say when a person first needed a sofa cushion. Most likely, this happened after the “invention” of furniture, at that moment when animal skins no longer brought a normal approach. Sofa cushions, like the sofas themselves, clearly came to us from the Middle East, where they traditionally and scrupulously relate to comfort and luxury. So that the appearance of pillows in our homes, we owe the Turkish Janissaries, or Persians. And thanks for that.

How, then, to choose a sofa cushion in the living room, or in the hall? First of all, it depends on the size of the room and on the style of the interior. Only correctly selected pillows will make the room cozy. There are several varieties of sofa cushions. All of them are convenient, and quite practical. You just need to pick them by color and style.

• Doomka. The most common. They are square, less often rectangular, usually of a small format from 200 to 400 cm. on the side.
• Pillow cushions. Also a common type. Often replace the armrests of sofas or armchairs, as well as bed head restraints. Often they act as an addition to thoughts. Candy-shaped pillows are good for rooms.
• Round, turkish pillows. As the name implies, these are pillows of a round shape, collected, rather magnificent.
• Cushion covers. They are made from a wide variety of materials. This is usually fabric. You can find covers: cotton, linen, velor, silk, velvet, guipure, tapestry. There are also from synthetic fabrics, faux or natural fur, leather. Sometimes there are knitted covers, and patchwork covers, combined. Pillows with covers of various materials, laid side by side, look very peculiar, since the combination of different textures is always interesting.

The role of pillows in the interior

In addition to sofas, armchairs and chairs, as well as beds, are complemented by decorative pillows. They are used on the surface of the floor, especially often in children's and playrooms, and in relaxation rooms (a kind of oriental chill-out).

Probably, it’s not worth talking about how comfortable the pillows are, and they are necessary for comfort, this is obvious. But how pillows affect the style of the room is necessary. If the pillows are chosen correctly, then they themselves can create a style, or at least become a hallmark of the living room, emphasizing the existing style.

This applies, as well as to the eastern styles, Arabic and Moroccan. In them not only large pillows with embroidery and tassels will be appropriate, but also many bright pillows of various juicy colors.

For the interior in the Empire style and classicism styles, thoughts and rollers with tapestry covers, fringe and tassels will be an excellent addition. They will go well with lampshades, chandeliers and candelabra.

In minimalist style interiors, small leather laconic little thoughts will be harmonious.

For a glamorous interior, to emphasize the snobbery of the owners, pillows in covers made of natural fur or thin leather will be good. For safari-style rooms, pillows with covers and leather depicting wild animals will be a great addition.

Accent role of pillows

Few things can put such bright, colorful accents as a sofa cushion in the living room interiors. In addition, they are usually not expensive, which is their indisputable advantage. They do not even need to be changed, it is enough to replace the covers.

Of course, accent pillows "work" only with the background. Pillows of bright colors on a neutral background will simply shine, but on a bright background they should be emphasized in contrast.

The connecting role of pillows

Pillows are often used to bond various pieces of furniture in different colors. If the sofa is bright red and the chairs are beige, then it is appropriate to put beige pillows on the sofa, and red on the chair. You can also knit together a variety of chairs, ottomans, beds.

How to choose the color of the pillows.

The easiest, but not always acceptable way, is tone on tone. In the usual interior, this method is of little use, because of its dullness. But in the classical style, it is very appropriate, as it emphasizes severity, as in minimalism - restraint.

Monotony can be varied by choosing covers for pillows, albeit in tone with furniture, but with drawings or embroidery in excellent color. You can play on the difference in the texture of materials. To put on a velor sofa a similar color, but silk or leather pillows. This should make the composition more interesting. In other styles, contrasting pillows will attract spectacular attention. But still, the color of the pillows should be in harmony with something: with the color of the curtains, with lampshades, chandeliers, vases, etc.

Almost always, pillows in two colors are acceptable: in black and white. They can be simply striped, with an abstract pattern, or with a pattern under the skin of a zebra. They will look especially good in modern interiors. You can use pillows in two colors, but the main thing is not to make a mistake in combination. Red and blue pillows are appropriate for a purple sofa, and yellow and blue for a green sofa.

For many interiors, multicolor is also suitable. This is especially true for Moroccan-style living rooms. But in this case, large pillows are needed, and their covers are very bright.

And, of course, it is not forbidden to experiment with such wonderful decoration elements as sofa cushions, combine them in every possible way, try new materials for covers, and diversify colors. Experimenting is the same as doing. And creativity is always beautiful.

Modern stores sell the so-called companion fabrics. When buying fabric for curtains, you can order a harmonious or contrasting fabric for pillows. The same goes for wallpaper. It is enough to have a small sample of wallpaper with you, and in the store the consultants will select the appropriate fabric for pillows on it.
