One of the popular materials in the production of various designs is a furniture pipe, which can be made of chromed metal, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene. Finished products look unusual, but are characterized by durability and low cost. Furniture made of PVC pipes is safe, it is suitable for the interior of a room of any functional purpose.

Chromed pipes are one of the types of furniture fittings, which is most often used in the manufacture of kitchen sets, products for trading floors, exhibition models. Accessories are offered by elements with a length of 0.6-3 m, their diameter can be 10, 16, 25, 32 or 50 mm. Products with a cross section of less than 10 mm can be used for decoration. If you plan to make furniture only from pipes, then choose plastic models with a nickel-plated surface.

Structural elements can be used in the production of supporting legs of tables and display cases, storage systems. From the pipes, hangers for cabinets or freestanding floor models are mounted.

Products are classified according to several criteria:

• the shape of the section distinguish: square, round, oval, polygonal;
• according to the type of walls, the products are divided into thin-walled and thick-walled;
• surface texture can be matte, glossy, tinted;
• the shape of the product is distinguished: linear, curved at an angle of 135 ° or 90 °, S-shaped products.

Depending on the intended use, choose a specific type of material:

• for furniture production, a chrome-plated rod with a cross section of 25 mm is suitable round or oval;
• exhibition and trade systems use pipes for furniture with a cross section of 25 mm;
• roof racks with a cross section of 26 mm are suitable for kitchen sets;
• supports are mounted from bar pipes with a cross section of 50 mm.

Special profile pipes with a square or rectangular cross-section can be used as structural elements, as a metal bar. The most commonly used profiles with parameters 50x50, 40x80, 40x100 mm, it is convenient to use such pipes on flat surfaces.

Important in the design of furniture from pipes is the correct calculation of the load, especially at the joints of the elements. Be sure to carry out the drawing. For frames, it is worth choosing products with a diameter of at least 50 mm, they are characterized by maximum strength, withstand weight up to 60 kg. However, with constant exposure to large loads, pipe deflection occurs. The use of chrome-plated elements with a diameter of 25 mm or less is possible as jumpers. For fixing, use connectors, bows, lock systems.

Advantages and disadvantages

Structural elements are used in the manufacture of various furniture. In production, plastic or metal pipes can be used. The main advantages of materials are:

Reliable and durable furnishings are obtained from thick-walled pipes, while thin-walled products with low weight allow you to realize many of the author's ideas.

The main disadvantages include:

• a small assortment of furnishings that can be made from these materials;
• even taking into account the high strength of the chrome-plated coating, work with pipes requires leisurely and accurate. If necessary, bend the element it is preheated not on an open fire.

In the manufacture of interior items for baths and saunas from water pipes, it is worth giving preference to products made of polypropylene. Polyvinyl chloride has a low resistance to high temperatures.

Materials of manufacture

Furniture thin-walled cold-rolled pipes are made of steel grades 08, 1sp / ps, 2sp / ps, 08yu. In the production of stainless steel products, material of the AISI 304, 08X12H10, 12X18H10T grades is used. Stainless steel models have a longer life, but are more expensive.

Elements obtained by the cold rolling method are of high quality. Without additional treatments, products can be painted with powders, galvanized, galvanized.The most popular chrome products are characterized by maximum corrosion resistance. It is possible to apply such a coating to pipes of their plastic, metal, non-metallic compounds. When creating furniture designs, chrome is applied to a substrate of copper or nickel.

Chrome plating is performed in one of three ways:

• diffuse involves saturation of the surface of an element with chromium. The process is carried out at special facilities in industrial production;
• chemical occurs by reducing the chromium layer from saline;
• electrolytic occurs when cells are immersed in an electrolytic bath. Suitable for chrome plating even at home.

The electrolytic method allows the production of surfaces with different textures. Milk chromium is obtained at a temperature of 60-80 ° C; it easily bends without deformation of the coating. Chrome plating is obtained at a temperature of 45-60 ° C. The appearance of the products is as attractive as possible, the wear resistance of the coating is good. Hard chromium plating is characterized by a large thickness of the chromium layer, increased strength. A chrome-plated furniture pipe with a hard type of coating is rarely used, as products are heavy.

Modern pipes made of polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride are not inferior to metal in functionality. Products are easily mounted and dismantled. Furniture made of polypropylene pipes has a long service life, is not afraid of high humidity. You can use such furnishings even outdoors.

Products made of polyvinyl chloride are more often used for the arrangement of sewer systems than in the manufacture of furniture. They have a low cost, but do not withstand overheating. Unlike PVC, structures made of pp pipes can be heated up to 60 degrees, and reinforced even higher.

Terms of use

When working with thin-walled chrome elements, the following tools are required:

• blowtorch;
• hacksaw for metal;
• vise;
• drill.

Pre-heating of the chrome-plated elements is carried out with a blowtorch. The temperature increase is carried out gradually. Large pipes are cut into segments of a given size with a hacksaw with small teeth. It is not recommended to use a grinder for cutting a pipe element, the surface of the metal heats up and slightly deforms. It is possible to smooth out burrs with fine-grained emery paper.

The vice is wrapped in soft textile or felt. They give the product the necessary shape. They fasten the structure with a drill, drilling is performed at low speeds. For chrome pipes, fittings with a similar coating are chosen.

Creating interior items from plastic elements is faster and easier than from metal ones. Start the process with a sketch and installation diagram. Next, prepare the necessary elements of the specified parameters using pipe cutters or special scissors. Fixing and assembly is carried out using fittings, a special soldering iron and adhesive composition.

For structures that are not designed for heavy loads, choose an inexpensive material from polyvinyl chloride. Propylene pipes will make it possible to manufacture a product of high strength. It is also possible to combine materials, then the frame is made of polypropylene, and sections with low load are trimmed with PVC segments.

The assembly of such furniture begins with the simplest models: chairs, tables, coasters, shelves. Once the basic skills are mastered, you can create complex designs.
