Good furniture costs decent money, which is not always enough. But who said that one cannot give a second life to old, already familiar and beloved things? You can update an outdated wardrobe or chest of drawers using simple, accessible techniques for everyone. This is the usual painting of furniture. Moreover, even children can be taught to use such techniques in life. There are special methods, for example, coloring furniture, with which the baby will be able to study interior items, as well as learn how to translate their ideas on the color scheme of rooms.

Styling options

It is not necessary to part with old and beloved furniture, because there are a lot of ways to update it in accordance with the desired style and color scheme.

1. The one-color option is the simplest. It does not require sharp lines or the ability to mix different colors. At the same time, the resulting furniture can be used in almost any room;
2. Multi-colored elements - an interesting and uncomplicated option is to color the furniture in different colors. It can be boxes or doors, multi-colored legs. It looks beautiful if you use the gradient technique when colors smoothly flow into each other;
3. Stripes and other geometric shapes. If you want to get bright, cheerful furniture, then several colors are mixed at once. There are a lot of options for their use, but all kinds of stripes, zigzags and other geometric patterns are most common. For the implementation of some of it will be necessary to try, because there is not enough wide tape. For example, rhombs and triangles will force you to pick up a ruler and remember drawing lessons;
4. The stencil is easy to use if you want to apply a complex graphic design to the surface. Especially often this technique is used for painting children's furniture. Moreover, the stencil can be made independently from cardboard;
5. Lace pattern - such a coloring of the room and furniture will add a little romantic mood. To complete the pattern, you will need a piece of lace fabric, 2 colors of paint, one of which should be in the spray, tape. The element to be painted is pre-painted with the base color. After it dries, a lace fabric is attached to the surface using tape, over which a spray can with a different color of paint is sprayed. The fabric is removed - a beautiful drawing is ready. It is not necessary to completely cover the furniture with a pattern; it is enough to select individual elements, for example, chest drawers.

On the "fresh" surface, you can apply additional decoration. Do-it-yourself furniture can be decorated using modern techniques. One of the most popular right now is decoupage and artificial aging.

1. Roller, brush - do not have a fundamental difference. The roller is often used for large surfaces, and for painting hard-to-reach spots a brush is used;
2. Aerosol - allows you to get a flat uniform surface without smudges.

It is worth paying attention that all the lacquer and colorful materials are divided into finishing and special purposes. Finishing is usually intended for decoration, and the second type is used for surfaces of furniture made of wood, which will be located on the street. That is, if a room with furniture is being painted, we pay attention to finishing materials, and if objects are in the garden or on the veranda, then for special-purpose paints.

Selection of materials and tools

The final list of tools will depend on the chosen staining method, but tentatively it will include:

• The primer is necessary to ensure a smooth surface, its good adhesion to the paint;
• Sandpaper to prepare the surface, remove residual old varnish or paint;
• Putty and putty knives, if there are problem areas on the furniture;
• Gloves, respirator, safety glasses;
• Tray for paint;
• Rollers or brushes - even if using paint in the form of an aerosol, a brush will be needed to paint hard-to-reach spots;
• Alcohol solution for degreasing;
• Suitable paint, varnish if necessary.

Almost all of these materials will be required in the process of changing furniture. A particularly important role is played by the selection of suitable paint. It could be:

• Acrylic is preferred for use, as it has a mild odor, dries quickly, and is stable. It is available both in containers and in the form of aerosols, which is most convenient;
• Enamel is also popular because it gives gloss to the surface, is harmless, dries quickly, does not deteriorate from moisture, dries well, protects metal from corrosion;
• Oil - is used only if there is a need to obtain a matte effect, otherwise impractical, quickly deteriorates and dries for a long time.

As you can see, each type of paint used has its own advantages and disadvantages.

There are several recommendations that will come in handy when painting furniture yourself. They will help to achieve a good result the first time:

• It is better to choose all materials from one manufacturer - in this case, the color palette and composition are most compatible with each other;
• Do not limit yourself to plain shades - bright colors help expand the space;
• It is necessary to use improvised materials, for example, a masking tape for even lines between colors;
• The brushes should be of high quality - before starting work, you need to check whether the pile is strewed from them.

If you plan to paint furniture in the apartment using chemicals, such as paints and solvents, you should definitely follow safety precautions when working with them. This means: ventilate the room, use gloves and a respirator.

Changing furniture through painting will allow you to get items that fit perfectly into many styles. But they are especially suitable for vintage trends in the interior: Provence, retro, vintage, rustic style, Scandinavian.
