Step-by-step instructions for making a bed frame with your own hands

The center of any bedroom is the bed. The importance of this type of furniture is very high - it is on it that a person spends almost a third of his life, resting after working days. And despite the fact that the modern furniture market allows you to purchase a convenient product at an attractive price, you can make a bed frame with your own hands quite simply and with minimal investment.

How to decide on the design

Among the structures most used for self-manufacturing, it is worth highlighting:

  • The frame of edged boards and bars is the cheapest and easiest to assemble frame. It does not require special skills and an expensive tool;
  • A frame made of square cross-sectional metal pipes of different cross sections is used less frequently than a wooden structure, as it requires the skills of a welder and the presence of a good welding machine.

When choosing a particular frame design, the following factors should be considered:

  • Dimensions and weight of the mattress - when using a large and heavy mattress (for example, 160 × 200 cm), the presence of various amplifiers in the design, the use of more reliable and durable fasteners should be provided;
  • The height of the future design - the bed, together with the mattress laid inside its frame, should have a height at which it would be convenient for its owner to sit on it and just as easily get up;
  • The presence of built-in drawers - if it is planned to place drawers for bedding or other things under the bed, then this should be taken into account when planning the height of the frame.

In most cases, all the requirements for this furniture meet the design of wooden trim boards and bars.

Design

Designing a bed frame consists of the following steps:

  • The choice of the place where the bed will be located - this piece of furniture should be placed in the room in such a way as not to impede the movement of people, the opening of entrance doors, cabinet doors. The bed should not stand close to heating appliances, batteries, windows;
  • Sizing of the future design. For this, the dimensions of the mattress, the convenience for people of non-standard growth, the presence of free space for installation are taken into account. At this stage, determine the dimensions of the future design, provide for the number and location of amplifiers and other supporting elements;
  • Drawings of the frame are performed using simple computer programs or manually - the linear dimensions are drawn up as a visual drawing.

One of the simple graphic editors is the Graphite utility - an intuitively simple and understandable program that allows you to create well-read, high-quality drawings. Of particular importance is the last stage of design - drawing up a drawing. The result of the assembly depends on a correctly made and well-readable drawing. All sizes and arrangement of parts of the frame should be clearly visible, adjacent labels and numbers should not merge.

Preparation of materials

In order to independently build a bed frame for a standard mattress with a size of 1400 × 2000 mm, the following materials are required:

  • Dry edged pine or spruce board: 200 × 30 × 2000 mm - 2 pcs; 200 × 30 × 1400 mm - 3 pcs;
  • Pine slats: 50 × 10 × 1380 mm - 15 pcs;
  • Sliced pine block: 50 × 50 × 2000 mm - 3 pcs; 50 × 50 × 700 mm - 2 pcs; 50 × 50 × 500 mm - 2 pcs; 50 × 50 × 300 mm - 1 pc.

All bars and boards should have a moisture content of not more than 10%, a healthy surface without dropping knots and rot. In order to completely prevent deformation of the material, it is first left for several days in the room where the structure made of them will stand.

Materials

Of the fasteners required:

  • Drywall screws, wood with a rare thread 3 × 30, 4,5 × 40 mm;
  • Fixing metal furniture corners in the size: 70 × 60 mm, 20 × 15 mm, 35 × 80 mm;
  • Dowels wooden furniture 8 × 35 mm.

Assembly process

Do-it-yourself bed frame is as follows:

  • Headboard assembly - at the long ends of two boards 200 × 30 × 1400 mm. holes are drilled. End surfaces and dowels inserted into holes are treated with PVA glue and tightly joined;
  • From 2 boards of 200 × 30 × 2000 mm in size, 1 board of 200 × 30 × 1400 mm and a headboard, using the corners of 70 × 60 mm, a rectangular frame of the frame is assembled;
  • In 2 long bars of 50 × 50 × 700 mm and the ends of the headboard, holes are drilled. The headboard and legs are connected using dowels, which are inserted into the drilled holes, and PVA glue;
  • Long front legs are also attached to the main frame using self-tapping screws screwed through pre-drilled holes in the bends of the corners 70 × 60 mm;
  • In a similar way, the rear legs of bars of 50 × 50 × 500 mm are attached to the frame;
  • To the long sidewalls are fixed with the help of corners 35 × 80 mm 2 bars in size 50 × 50 × 2000 mm. A third block of the same size is attached in the middle of the frame to two end walls using angles of 20 × 15 mm. In the middle of the bar, an additional leg of the bar 50 × 50 × 300 mm is also installed using the corner;
  • 25 rods of 50 × 10 × 1380 mm are attached to the fixed bars through an equal distance, thereby obtaining the bottom of the frame;
  • The slats of the bottom of the frame are additionally connected with three long tapes using a construction stapler.

The resulting frame after bonding all parts needs minimal processing.

Final processing

At the final stage, the bed base (frame) made in this way goes through the following stages of final processing:

  • Grinding - using a grinding machine and a set of sandpaper, the surface of all parts of the frame is processed. It is preferable to use centrifugal grinders with a special container for assembling large sawdust formed during surface treatment;
  • Sealing of cracks and pits - cracks and pits formed during grinding are sealed with a special putty compound, which is selected to match the color of the wood. After hardening putty, the surface is re-ground;
  • Application of stains - to protect wood from moisture, mold, use acrylic or wax stains. They are applied with a wide brush in several layers. The advantages of such stains are that they dry quickly enough, do not give smudges and stains, well emphasize the wood texture, have a uniform tone across the entire application surface;
  • Application of several layers of varnish - after drying the stain, 2-3 layers of transparent waterproof varnish are applied. In order to hide all surface blemishes that remain even after sanding, it is better to use matte varnishes that can mask small scratches and chips.

By learning how to quickly and easily make a frame for a bed with your own hands, you can not only save money on the purchase of this furniture, but also acquire useful skills in assembling such structures. In addition, unlike most beds made of chipboard or MDF, a do-it-yourself bed made of wood will last several times longer.
