Modern Ashkelon has been in existence since 1951. The city is located in the southwestern part of Israel, it is 56 km from Tel Aviv, and 70 km from Jerusalem. Now the southeastern part of the wall is used as an amphitheater for various cultural events (capacity of 10,000 people).

• City gate built in 1850 BC from clay brick and local sandstone (kurkar). The gates look like a huge corridor: length 15 m, height 4 m and width more than 2 m.
• The ruins of the basilica with marble columns and floor, as well as statues of the II-III centuries A.D. This basilica was the center of public life of the ancient city.
• Wells - there are 67 in all, and 5 of them are colonies with antilines associated with Jerusalem sources. In Israel, a legend is told: during ablution, the priest in the temple of Jerusalem dropped the cup, and after a while the waters brought it through underground caves to one of the local wells.

In specially designated areas, they sow shallot seeds, then new seeds are collected from ripened plants and sown again - this should last 10 years. Between May and October, the air temperature rises to + 25 ... +30 ° C, and the water in the sea warms up to +28 ° C. Summer heat here is not felt much and is easily tolerated, without much discomfort. This is explained both by refreshing breezes coming from the side of the closely located sea, and by winds lowering humidity blowing from the desert (stone plateau) of the Negev.

In winter, the air temperature drops to +18 ° C. It rarely rains here, mainly from November to March (about 420 mm of rainfall per year).

Given the weather conditions described, we can conclude: the period from May to October is the ideal time to relax on the sea beaches, and a pleasant winter cool is more suitable for exploring the city and its attractions.

How to get to Ashkelon

Ashkelon is 65 km from Ben Gurion International Airport. The cheapest option to get to the resort from the airport is by train. But the bus option is also worth considering, since buses go to the very center of Ashkelon, and the railway station is located on its outskirts (by the way, bus number 18 runs from the railway station to hotels in the harbor).

From the Airport / Termin 1 stop, located near the airport, bus number 485 runs - it takes 30 minutes and 1-2 € to get to the Hemed Interchange stop. At the same stop, you need to change to bus number 437 - in just an hour, he arrives at Ashkelon Central Bus Station. Ticket price is 9 €.

The railway station at Ben Gurion Airport is located on the lower floor (S) of Terminal 3. You need to take train number 50 and get to Tel Aviv Haganah station (the first in Tel Aviv). On time, the trip takes 12 minutes, the fare 2-4 €. At the same station, you need to transfer to train number 41 and go already to Ashkeron. The journey lasts 52 minutes, the ticket costs 5-7 €.
