Why do aphids affecting cucumbers appear and what happen? How to deal with insects?

Aphid is a small insect of green or black color, it is the most dangerous pest of plants.

Parasites drink vital juices from roots and shoots, leading to a decrease in fruiting, and sometimes to the death of shrubs, trees or vegetable crops.

This article describes in detail how to get rid of aphids on cucumbers using folk methods and chemicals tested by gardeners.

Types of insects infecting vegetables

In the greenhouse and on the open ground on cucumbers, gourd aphids settle. It harms not only cucumbers, but also tomatoes, beets, pumpkins, zucchini, carrots and berry bushes.

In size, this species of aphid does not exceed 2.1 mm, has a different color:

  • brown;
  • greenish;
  • light yellow;
  • black - green.

In a greenhouse, aphids of this species appear in the spring, and in the open ground at the beginning of summer. Cucumbers and other plants need to be processed as soon as larvae are discovered.

Harm

It is possible to determine the appearance of a parasite on cucumbers by the following signs:

  • Aphids settle on the leaves of the plant, they begin to curl and fade.
  • It is clearly visible on the back of the sheet. It is very small in size, but despite this, it will not be difficult to see it. Accumulation of the pest can also be found on the epaulettes and in the axils of the leaves.
  • Honey dew appears.

Having discovered these signs, urgent measures must be taken to destroy the pest until it has destroyed the plant.

Where and why do they appear?

By the middle of summer, aphids on cucumbers become more noticeable, it has multiplied quite strongly. Its reproduction depends on an increase in temperature; in greenhouses, its appearance begins in the spring.

The pest overwinters on weeds, and with them gets into the greenhouse. Winged individuals usually look for plants nearby, do not fly over long distances, so zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, it is better to plant away from each other, this will complicate their infection.

Ants are considered good "friends" to this pest, they transfer aphids to other plants, protect and protect it, and in return she feeds them with sweet dew juice. The fight must begin with ants. Ants bring benefits to the land, so they can also harm the soil on which they settle. If there are ants in the vicinity of the garden, you must urgently get rid of them.

How to fight?

Consider how to deal with insects that settle on the leaves, bottom on the back, in the sinuses and other places. There are several ways to use the pest.

Folk remedies

  1. Vinegar. The smell of a bite, repels the pest well.

    Aphids will die if you make a solution: on a bucket of water, take 2 tablespoons of vinegar essence, add a small amount of laundry soap so that the solution does not drain, but sticks to the leaves.

  2. Soda. To get rid of aphids, three treatments with an interval of 1-2 days are enough. For 2 liters of water we take 70-80 grams of soda and 15 drops of essential oil of cedar, lavender or geranium.

    The solution will turn out with a pungent odor, which will help to scare off the insect well.

  3. Ash. It is considered a useful top dressing for cucumbers, while it repels aphids well. Use it in a dry form, the dry substance must be scattered on the leaves where aphid was seen. You can also make a solution. For 10 liters of water you will need 2 cups of ash and 50 grams of laundry soap. You can use the solution after the soap has dissolved.

    Ash is considered one of the effective pest control, but it is better to use it before flowering! If the solution gets on the flowers, they will not be bright and the bees will not pollinate them.

  4. Garlic or onion. The pungent odor repels the insect. You can make a solution of 100 gr. chopped onion or garlic and 1 liter of water.

    After this treatment, the leaves of the plant are no longer suitable for aphids.

What to process from biological preparations?

  1. Bitoxibacillin. A powder preparation which contains a substance containing special bacteria that kill aphids.
  2. Fitoverm. The drug is mild, you can use at any stage of infection.
  3. Arrow. High-quality tool that quickly relieves the pest. It is necessary to observe the dosage of the drug, since it can accumulate in the ground.
  4. Entobacterin. The drug is in the form of an emulsion. After processing, the result becomes noticeable on day 2.

Chemical treatment

Chemicals, this is the last measure of impact on the disease, when other drugs failed. They are toxic and can be harmful to humans, so wear protective clothing, glasses, gloves and a respirator before handling plants.

Chemicals are:

  1. Actellic. This tool without any problems kills the insect. Also note that the drug belongs to the 2nd class of danger to humans ;.
  2. Actofit. The tool destroys aphids, moths and fruit stalks. The drug belongs to the 3rd hazard class for humans.
  3. Fufanon. The drug copes with aphids in one day, does not have an unpleasant odor.
  4. Tanrek. After using this drug, aphids will die in 2 days.
Do not use chemicals in greenhouses or do it extremely rarely, because they are poorly ventilated and can be harmful to humans.

Features of the fight in greenhouses

Greenhouse processing begins after the season, i.e. in the fall. During the processing of the greenhouse, it is necessary to completely remove the tops and all plant residues. The following preparations are used for processing greenhouses:

  • Karbafos - This chemical solution is used for tillage. The solution is diluted (add 10 grams of solution in 10 liters of water).
  • Bleaching powder - Ready-made powder with a pungent odor. The drug is scattered on the surface of the soil, after which the earth is loosened. This tool destroys aphids and larvae.
  • Blue vitriol - kills larvae and fungal infections.

Preventative measures

To prevent the problem of killing aphids, preventive measures must be taken:

  • Weed between the rows once a week.
  • Preventive spraying (in spring and autumn).
  • Between the rows of cucumbers, plant fragrant plants that will scare away the insect, such as: garlic, onions, marigolds.

Keep track of the crop all season. For prevention, spray the area once a week and remember about fertilizer for plants, healthy plants cope better with pests.
